San Marino
The traditional arms San Marino depict the three citadels on Mount Titano - Guaita, Cesta and Montale - and which at one time had ostrich feather vanes. The motto is that of the 4th century founder of this republic, St. Marinus, who intended it to be a refuge for those fleeing from persecution.
The national flag of the republic dates back to the last few years of the 18th century, and Napoleon recognized the flag as one being flown by an independent country. This happened in 1799, right around the turn of the century.
Even though the official flag is quite plain, during official events and such the arms are placed over all in the center.
